They house the pump and provide a collection basket for debris — the most common choice for new pond builds. Floating skimmers sit on the water surface and connect to an external pump. They are ideal for retrofitting existing ponds where cutting into the liner is not desirable, and they can be positioned wherever debris accumulates most. Sizing and Placement Position your skimmer on the side of the pond opposite the prevailing wind direction so that natural air currents push floating debris toward the intake. For ponds up to 2,000 gallons, a single skimmer is usually sufficient. Larger ponds may benefit from two skimmers or a skimmer paired with additional surface agitation.
