Like the previous generation, this engine family was developed with the scope of marine use. Introduced in 2003, they feature common rail fuel injection and advanced electronics like EVC (Electronic Vessel Control). The 4 valves per cylinder, driven by twin camshafts, achieve improved fuel efficiency and meet the stricter Tier 3 emission standards. Volvo redesigned the engines in 2019 in order to increase their power output and fuel efficiency while making their maintenance easier. The engines can be installed as inboards, with sterndrives (DPH & DPR), or with IPS pods, thus offering great versatility among catamarans, speedboats, and yachts. The earliest D4 engines had 145HP, while the latest models feature an astonishing 320HP, all coming out of 4 cylinders with a total capacity of 3.7L and the assistance of a turbocharger. Its six-cylinder counterpart almost hits the 500HP mark and has an engine capacity of 5.5L. Poseidon Marine offers parts for Volvo Penta D4 and D6 at
