The U.S. Mint ushered in a new, modern era of commemorative coins in 1982 when it released a commemorative half dollar honoring the 250 th anniversary of George Washington’s birth. It was the first commemorative coin released in nearly three decades, and the first 90% silver coin the mint produced since 1964. Modern commemoratives have since been struck as both Proof and regular issues in numerous compositions – including gold, silver and clad – to honor a wide range of people, places, organizations and events. These special issues have proven immensely popular among collectors for their historic themes and artistic designs.
