Calendulas were once called pot marigolds or golds by early herbalists, who tended them in physic gardens enclosed within ancient walls. Today, gardeners are still immensely fond of this colorful bloomer with a long flowering time. Easy to grow, it thrives in early summer and again in fall, when the flowers are larger and positively glow in the more subdued light of fall.
