Penstemon plants are bursting with dangling tubular bells that hummingbirds visit often, even for a last sip of the day as dusk falls. Native to the eastern half of the country and into the midwest, calico beardtongue is a powerhouse of long-lasting blooms held on strong, purple-tinged stems. It remains beautiful throughout the season; as fall approaches, the leaves and clustered seedheads turn vivid shades of purple and red. It blooms abundantly in part shade and is adaptable to many soil situations, including rain gardens.
