Historically, wheat fields often contained multiple varieties. Farmers would save and trade seeds and pass them from generation to generation. Landraces are highly sustainable models with low input requirements and are a key step towards diversity. Today, landrace wheats (locally adapted crop cultivars) that can withstand environmental hardships are practically extinct.
