These bumpers are available in several different styles, all designed to withstand heavy force from HGVs. Some have the rubber sandwiched between metal front and back plates or within a steel cage, so that the rubber section can be removed and replaced at the end of its life. An alternative style features a low-friction plastic front plate that slides freely up and down within a steel cradle back plate. This prevents lorries from snagging on the bumper and damaging it during loading or unloading. For example, let’s say an empty artic has reversed against the bumper. As you load the goods and the weight increases, the floor of the trailer will sit progressively lower - but the bumper’s sliding plastic section will move along with it.
