The first use of didymium glass lenses to filter the sodium flare light in glass torchworking is attributed to Sir William Crookes in the 1870s. However, thanks to modern dye chemistry, new dye compounds have been discovered that are capable of providing the same sodium-flare filtering as didymium, but without the downsides of using actual didymium in the lens. VETROSAFE glassworking eyewear are exclusively made with a didymium-free sodium flare lens that provides enhanced comprehensive eye protection. Our proprietary formula enables us to provide extra safety features as standard, like enhanced UV protection, blue-light filtering, and over 95% blocking of wavelengths of invisible infrared radiation emitted by hot glass and glass kilns. Unlike conventional didymium glasses which are merely a neodymium-containing mineral glass, the VETROSAFE lenses are specifically designed from the ground up to accomodate the needs of special purpose glassworking activities including lampworking, flameworking and glassblowing, and, our lenses and frames meet or exceed the American National Standards Institute requirements for a ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 Shade #3 rated eye protector.
