Height is the most important specification in a children's table. A table that's too high forces uncomfortable hunching or working with arms raised; too low and the child has to stoop over it. As a guide: the table surface should sit level with the child's waist when standing. For a 3-year-old that's typically 45-50cm; for a 5-year-old, 50-55cm; for an 8-year-old, 55-62cm. Adjustable-height tables that grow with the child are practical for longer-term use but typically cost more. Storage integration is a significant advantage in many designs. Tables with a storage compartment in the top (accessed via a lift-up surface) keep art supplies, crayons and small toys contained without requiring a separate storage unit. This is particularly valuable in smaller homes and apartments where play space and storage are both limited. Surface material matters for a table that's going to be used for craft, painting and play-dough. Smooth laminate surfaces clean easily with a damp cloth and resist staining from most water-based paints and markers. Solid timber is warmer and more durable but may show permanent stain marks from paint and markers unless sealed with a hard-wearing lacquer. Safety standards are worth verifying for any furniture used by young children. Look for rounded edges, stable construction that doesn't tip when a child leans on the edge and non-toxic finishes.
