NIKKA WHISKY的創辦人竹鶴政孝是日本威士忌之父。他是第一個遠赴蘇格蘭學釀威士忌的日本人。 1934年竹鶴政孝於日本北海道余市建立余市蒸餾所並且成立大日本果汁株式會社 (現在改名為NIKKA威士忌株式會社)，雖然該地點位置不便，但竹鶴政孝認為該地區才是全日本製作威士忌最理想的場所。此地環境與蘇格蘭類似，擁有涼爽的氣候、清新的空氣和適當的溼度。在1969年，為了讓製作的威士忌有更多差異性，竹鶴政孝找到了位於仙台宮城峽的美麗山谷，該谷擁有優質水源 NIKKAWA 日川，在品嘗當地的水源後，竹鶴政孝立即決定在此建立蒸餾廠，該年即是1969年，宮城峽蒸餾廠從此誕生。
